CLAY COUNTY
2 charged with robbing, kidnapping, stabbing man
Authorities identified two people Friday who are charged with kidnapping, stabbing and robbing a Jacksonville man Thursday in Middleburg.
Covered in blood, 52-year-old James Waters stumbled to a fast-food restaurant about 3 a.m., banging on the windows for help, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began after Waters got a call from an acquaintance to visit her Bluegrass Avenue home in Middleburg, the arrest report said. Once inside, he was pistol-whipped and bound. He was then driven in his car by the woman and her partner to some ATMs to use his card. Afterward he was stabbed repeatedly. Before they could burn him and his car, he broke free and hid in the woods.
A deputy later spotted the pair walking from the burned remains of the car after Waters made it to a Hardee’s on Blanding Boulevard.
After several hours of questioning, authorities charged 39-year-old Darrell Lamont Thornton and 38-year-old Lisa Gail Mullis with attempted murder, armed kidnapping and robbery.
