 Melvin D. Mullis, Sr., age 70, passed away June 18, 2003 at a local hospital.

Mr. Mullis was born in Tampa, FL on September 24, 1932 and was the son of the late Emmitt Mullis and Lillie Mae Mullis.


Mr. Mullis was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Army in Germany and upon returning served 2 years in the Army Reserve with the rank of Staff Sgt. Mr. Mullis was employed with Peninsula Telephone Company and GTE Telephone Company in Tampa, FL.


He moved to Jacksonville in 1962 and along with his wife Shirley owned and operated Mullis Repair Service and Mullis Rentals for 40 years until their retirement in July 2002.


Mr. Mullis was a former member of the VFW Post 10164 serving as a commander and All State District 14 Commander in Interlachen, FL. Mr. Mullis was a life member of the VFW Post 7909, Military Order of the Cootie Catfish 23, DAV Southside Jacksonville 26 and a member of the American Legion Post 293 in Interlachen, FL.


Mr. Mullis is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley; daughter, Suzanne Middleton (husband, Stephen); sons, James D. Mullis & Melvin D. Mullis, Jr (deceased); 2 sisters, Gertrude Neeld and Shirley Beasley; 4 grandchildren, Sherlyn Price, Andria Middleton and Stephanie Roberts (husband, Eric) and Bryan Mullis; 3 greatgranddaughters, Audrey Price, Megan Price, and Amber Roberts.


Funeral services will be held 2 PM Tuesday, June 24, 2003 in the chapel of HARDAGEGIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 4315 Main St. with VFW Post 7909 in charge of services.


Serving as pallbearers will be Paul Duncan, Eric Roberts, Billy Roberts, Bill Markert, Molton Smith, Jr., and Dave McNew.


Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.


The family will receive friends from 69 PM Monday, June 23, 2003 at the funeral home.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VFW National Home, Eaton Rapid, Michigan or Veterans Retirement Home, Ft. McCoy, FL.
