Mullis, Joel Dwight

MULLIS Joel Dwight Mullis (70) went to be with our heavenly Father on March 9, 2009. He fought a courageous battle with cancer for over three and one half years and passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at his home in Mandarin.

He was born on November 19, 1938 in Baxley, Georgia and moved to Jacksonville at the age of 9. He returned to Baxley each summer throughout his teen years where he loved spending time on the family farm. He was the son of the late Joel D, and Della Herrington Mullis of Jacksonville.

Dwight served in the US Army and was later employed by the City of Jacksonville for 17 years as a supervisor in the Streets and Highways Division. Dwight was an accomplished real estate investor, builder and developer in the Jacksonville and surrounding areas where he worked closely with his wife and business partner, Verdain. He was a licensed real estate agent and a member of the Jacksonville Board of Realtors for over 25 Years.

He enjoyed spending time with his classmates from the Paxon High School class of 1957 as they gathered on a monthly basis for fun and reminiscing. He was also blessed with many lifelong friends from his church family. Always a fan of classic, antique cars and motor scooters he traveled to many of the largest shows in the southeast and was an avid collector. He had many and varied interests including fishing and boating with friends and family at their lake home in Keystone Heights; his horses, but most of all he cherished the time spent with his granddaughters.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Verdain, their daughter Lesa, Son-in-law Mark Holder, two granddaughters, Caroline and Jacquelyn, brothers, Ray (Betty), Earl (Ann), Ronnie (Brenda), Sister-in-law, Martha Nugent (Lynn), many nieces, nephews and Cody his appaloosa horse of 19 years. The family would also like to acknowledge Drucilla Melton of Waycross, Georgia for her loving care at the end of his illness and welcome her as part of our family.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, March 12, 2009 from 6 until 8 PM at Town & Country Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd. Join us to celebrate his life and commend him unto God at 11 am on Friday, March 13, 2009 at Town & Country Funeral Home chapel, with the Reverends Dale Kitchens and Ron Prosch officiating. Dwight and I attended school together from the 4th grade at Annie R Morgan to 12th grade at Paxon Sr High. I have never known a kinder, more gentle person than Dwight. So full of love and cared so much for so many, especially his family. I never heard an unkind word from him about anyone or anything. I am sorry I cannot be with the family tomorrow. I will be with you in Spirit. My love and prayers go out to Verdain and the children. The suffering for Dwight is over and he can now rest. My love, Marlene Thomas, Marietta, GA.

Dear Verdain and Extended Family, Our Hearts are heavy knowing that Dwight is no longer with us, but we do know, that He is no longer surfering and He is in a much better Place. We will miss him at our many gatherings, his smile, his good nature and His Love For God. We all
went to Paxon Senior High School togather. These past few years we
became closer as we all got older. There will be a void there, but
we know that He will be looking down and knowing, we all Loved him. God will take care of us and one day we will see him again.
May The Good Lord Bless Us all and take Care of us.

We Love You
