Mrs. McManus, 85, of Charlotte, died August 31 at her residence. Lula was born June 3, 1926 in Charlotte. She was the daughter of William Olin Mullis and Julia Hagler Mullis. She graduated from Oakhurst High School in 1943 and worked as an instructor at Chadborn Gotham Hosiery and later as a cashier in the Hickory Grove Elementary School cafeteria.

Lula was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Mack McManus, daughter, Robin McManus Brafford, and granddaughters, Bridget Beau Brafford and Sarah Angel Wood. She is survived by her loving daughter, Deborah and son-in-law, Joe Michalic of Charlotte; daughter, Vickie Wood of Harrisburg; daughter, Lorraine and son-in-law, Johnny Eason of Mineral Springs; and 3 grandchildren, Cristy Russell and husband, Lucas of Van Wyck, SC, Samantha Gunther and husband, Bill, of New Jersey, Gary Wood, Jr. and wife, Jennifer of Georgia. Also surviving are 5 great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Brennan Russell, William and Jethro Gunther and Meredith Wood; nephew, Andy Mullis and wife, Pam and niece, Joan Kizer and husband, Larry, of Harrisburg.

Lula left her lifelong home in Hickory Grove 11 years ago to make her home with her daughter Deborah and son-in-law Joe. She was a lifelong member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church and a member of the Epworth Sunday School Class. She loved music, her family and traveling to new places.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jennifer McMillan and staff at Harrisburg Family Physicians for their years of excellent care and the doctors, nurses and staff of Hospice for their compassion and exceptional care and attention. A special thanks to Lula’s caregivers, Jordan Freeman, Dawna Lindsey, Sarah Burgess and Elaine Straughn.

On Friday, September 2, 2011 the family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45 pm at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church life center. The funeral service will follow at 2 pm in the sanctuary. Interment will follow at Charlotte Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church and Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region.
