Mrs. Marguerite Kelley Mullis, age 88, passed away peacefully at Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility on Monday January 4, 2016.
She was born in the Bell Dixon Community of Decatur County, GA on August 16, 1927, the oldest child of James “Jim” Kelley and Lizzie Louvenia Cannon Kelley.
Marguerite and her husband moved to Statesboro in 1952. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church since that time. She was a member of the Sarah Miller Bible Study Group, Camilla Boyd Sunday School Class, Magnolia Garden Club, and Ogeechee Homemakers. Marguerite worked at Sears for a number of years and then served as Financial Secretary for First Baptist Church until her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 59 years, Everett Thaxton “Red” Mullis, a sister Sarah Kelley Pope, a brother James Carey Kelley, and a brother-in-law Elton Eugene Pope.
She is survived by one daughter Rosalynn “Lynn” Mullis Wright of Statesboro; three sons and daughters-in-law, James Thaxton “Jimmy” Mullis (Nancy), Rabun Gap, Jeffery Everett Mullis (Deborah), Brooklet and Savannah, and Michael Earl Mullis (Leslie), Atlanta; seven grandchildren, James Travis Mullis (Wendy) , Sautee Nacoochee, Michael Kelley Wright (Donna), Statesboro, Dr. Baron Thaxton Mullis (Hannah), Shalimar, FL, Joel Patrick Wright (Amy), Brooklet, Adam Michael Mullis, Margaret Kelley Mullis, and Sarah Lynn Mullis, Atlanta; 16 great grandchildren Chaz, Maddie, and Jared Mullis, Sautee Nacoochee, Lex Parrrish, Warner Robins, Ronna Grubbs, Hannah Parish and Nicholas Parish, Statesboro, Truman, Grace, and Catherine, Shalimar, FL and Ellie Jane, Lucy Marguerite, Lizzie, Jack, Henry, and Charlie Wright, Brooklet; sister Esther Kelley Maxwell of Camilla; niece Cathie Pope Pedersen (Pete), Havana, FL, two nephews Timothy Maxwell (Latricia), Camilla, Donald Pope, (Dawn), Valdosta; a brother-in-law Gerald Spencer Mullis, Macon, a sister-in-law Jeanette Mullis NaVal, Wilmington, NC and numerous Mullis nieces and nephews.
The family expresses gratitude for the care given by the staff of Ogeechee Area Hospice and her special friends, Dot Youngblood, Barbara Martin, Margaret Strickland and Chuck and Nancy DiPolito.
The visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m until 7:00 p.m. at Joiner Anderson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Dr. H. William Perry officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Interment will be in Eastside Cemetery.
