Clothing retailer Steve & Barry’s coming to Columbia Place

Feb. 13–Steve & Barry’s University Sportswear will open a store this summer at
Columbia Place in the old location of J.C. Penney.

The lifestyle apparel retailer — carrying athletic and everyday wear with an
average price of $10 — will occupy 62,000 square feet of anchor space on the
mall’s upper level, mall spokeswoman Colleen Mullis said.

Jay Kim, spokeswoman for Steve & Barry’s, said the Columbia Place store will
open "just in time for back to school," an important time for clothing retailers.

The Columbia store will be Steve & Barry’s sixth in South Carolina and third in
the Midlands. It has stores in Camden, Sumter, North Augusta, Rock Hill and
Greenville.

The company operates more than 180 stores nationwide.

Steve & Barry’s is a plum for Columbia Place, which lost its longtime J.C.
Penney store more than a year ago to the new and still-expanding Village at
Sandhill in Northeast Richland.

"This cutting-edge family apparel store is a great addition to the Columbia
Place retailer mix and further complements and strengthens the mall’s position
in the market area," said Charles Gwinn, the mall’s general manager.

When asked about the lower level of the old J.C. Penney, Mullis said, "Look for
some more announcements to come."
